Renowned Composer Jan A.P. Kaczmarek, Oscar Winner for “Finding Neverland,” Passes Away at 71

Internationally acclaimed composer Jan A.P. Kaczmarek, revered for his emotive musical compositions that graced both European and Hollywood cinema, has sadly passed away at the age of 71. Kaczmarek’s demise was confirmed by Poland’s Music Foundation, following his battle with Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), a rare degenerative neurological disorder. His wife, Aleksandra Twardowska-Kaczmarek, conveyed the somber news to the foundation.

Kaczmarek’s musical legacy spans decades, with notable contributions to cinematic masterpieces like “Total Eclipse” (1995) featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, and “Unfaithful” (2002) starring Richard Gere and Diane Lane. However, it was his remarkable score for the biographical fantasy “Finding Neverland” (2004) that propelled him to global recognition, earning him the prestigious Academy Award for Best Original Score in 2005. The film, inspired by the life of J.M. Barrie and starring Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet, showcased Kaczmarek’s unparalleled ability to evoke profound emotions through music.

Born in Konin, Poland, in 1953, Kaczmarek’s journey to becoming a celebrated composer took an unconventional path. Initially trained in law, his passion for music was ignited during a brief stint with avant-garde theater under the tutelage of Jerzy Grotowski in Poznan. This pivotal experience led him to establish his ensemble, the Orchestra of the Eighth Day, which captivated audiences across Europe with its innovative sound. Kaczmarek’s versatility as a musician, proficient in piano, synths, percussion, and the fidola, garnered him accolades, including multiple wins in Europe’s Jazz Forum magazine poll.

In 1989, Kaczmarek made the transatlantic leap to Los Angeles, where he continued to enchant audiences with his mesmerizing compositions. However, in the twilight of his illustrious career, he returned to his roots, residing in Krakow, southern Poland.

Jan A.P. Kaczmarek leaves behind a profound musical legacy, survived by his second wife, Aleksandra Twardowski-Kaczmarek, and five children. His indelible contributions to the world of cinema will forever resonate, serving as a testament to his unparalleled talent and unwavering passion for music.
