HBO Has Gratified DCU’s Lanterns Series for Eight Episodes

The Green Lantern series for HBO, dubbed “Lanterns,” has received official approval from Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. Eight episodes will be released to bring the DC universe’s strong-willed heroes to life. The show has been given a straight-to-series order. Renowned HBO talent has already committed to the project, including showrunner and executive producer Chris Mundy, who is best known for his work on “True Detective: Night Country” and “Ozark.” Alongside comic book icon Tom King, Damon Lindelof, known for “Watchmen,” “The Leftovers,” and “Lost,” will co-write and executive produce the series with Mundy.

“Lanterns” features two intergalactic police officers, new hire John Stewart and seasoned veteran Hal Jordan, as they become entangled in a sinister, terrestrial case involving a murder in the heartland of America. Favorite DC heroes are now part of the new DC Universe (DCU) that James Gunn and Peter Safran are creating with this series.

“With Chris, Damon, and Tom at the helm, we’re thrilled to bring this groundbreaking DC title to HBO,” Gunn and Safran said. “‘Lanterns’ brings to life two of DC’s most compelling characters—John Stewart and Hal Jordan—in an original detective story that serves as a cornerstone of the unified DCU we’re launching with ‘Superman,’ next summer.”

Producer Greg Berlanti, best known for The CW’s DC Arrow universe, was involved in the early development of the Green Lantern series nearly five years ago. Guy Gardner and Alan Scott, the Green Lanterns, were the main characters in the previous iteration of the series, which had Seth Grahame-Smith as writer and showrunner. But in 2022, following a creative makeover, the program turned its attention to John Stewart. This revision was made in line with Warner Bros. Discovery’s appointment of Peter Safran and James Gunn to lead DC Studios, which is tasked with bringing the DC Universe back to life on screen.

DC Studios abandoned Berlanti’s plan in favor of the “Lanterns” concept early in 2023. Safran pointed out that although their strategy is similar to “True Detective,” concentrating on a terrestrial-based detective story, Berlanti’s vision was more comparable to a space opera. With his involvement in “True Detective: Night Country,” Chris Mundy contributes pertinent experience to this new venture.

The chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, Casey Bloys, expressed enthusiasm about working with King again and getting back together with Lindelof and Mundy for this new interpretation of DC’s Green Lantern. “As part of James and Peter’s vision for the DC Universe, this first new live-action series will mark an exciting new era,” said Bloys.

“Lanterns,” which is being produced by Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios, is not yet set to premiere, but it looks like a major addition to the DCU. On July 11, 2025, the DCU will formally launch with “Superman,” starring David Corenswet as the superhero alongside well-known figures like Lex Luthor, Lois Lane, and Mister Terrific.
