Actor Kevin Spacey has opened up about his dire financial situation, revealing during a recent interview with Piers Morgan that his home is being foreclosed and sold at auction due to millions in unpaid legal fees. This revelation comes after years of legal cases related to sexual harassment allegations that have significantly impacted his career and finances.
During the emotional interview on “Piers Morgan Uncensored,” Spacey, struggling to hold back tears, admitted that he no longer has a permanent home and has very little money left. He explained, “It’s funny you ask that question because this week, where I have been living in Baltimore is being foreclosed on. My house is being sold at auction, so I have to go back to Baltimore and put my things in storage. So the answer to that question is, I’m not sure where I am going to live now. But I’ve been in Baltimore since we started shooting ‘House of Cards’ there. I moved there in 2012. This [house] has been my home since 2016. I can’t pay the bills that I owe.”
When asked if he was facing bankruptcy, Spacey revealed, “There’s been a couple of times when I thought I was going to file but we’ve managed to dodge it, at least as of today.” He further admitted, “You have some sense of legal bills. I still owe a lot… Yes [I am in debt]. It’s considerable. Many millions. The house itself is many millions.”
Spacey’s financial troubles stem from numerous legal battles following allegations of sexual misconduct that surfaced during the #MeToo movement in 2017. The initial accusation came from actor Anthony Rapp, who claimed that Spacey sexually assaulted him in 1986 when Rapp was 14 and Spacey was 26. This accusation led to a cascade of similar allegations from men of various ages and backgrounds, ranging from sexual harassment to attempted rape.
The fallout from these accusations was swift and severe. Spacey was fired from the hit Netflix series “House of Cards,” and his acting career seemed to come to an abrupt halt. Despite denying all allegations, Spacey has faced multiple legal challenges over the years.
In 2022, a New York jury concluded that Spacey did not molest Anthony Rapp. The following year, a U.K. court found Spacey not guilty of nine sexual assault charges brought by four complainants. Several other charges and lawsuits have also been dropped. Nevertheless, the legal battles have left Spacey with significant debt.
A two-part documentary titled “Spacey Unmasked” recently aired in the U.K. and is now streaming on Max. The documentary includes previously unheard testimonies about Spacey’s alleged sexual misconduct, such as claims that he groped another “House of Cards” actor on set. These revelations have only added to the actor’s public scrutiny.
Spacey’s current situation highlights the long-lasting impact of the #MeToo movement on those accused of sexual misconduct. While some legal battles have ended in his favor, the financial and reputational damage appears irreversible. As he faces the foreclosure of his Baltimore home and contemplates his uncertain future, Spacey remains a stark example of the profound consequences of such allegations.
In summary, Kevin Spacey’s financial and legal struggles continue to unfold, leaving him without a permanent home and in substantial debt. His case serves as a reminder of the severe repercussions that can follow accusations of sexual misconduct, irrespective of the legal outcomes.
