Devil Wears Prada Sequel under Original Writer in Works

For those who love “The Devil Wears Prada,” exciting news about a follow-up to the cherished 2006 movie is apparently under production. Aline Brosh McKenna, the original screenwriter, is in talks to script the follow-up; Wendy Finerman, who oversaw the first movie, is on board to produce once more.

Based on Lauren Weisberger’s book, the 2006 film stars Anne Hathaway as Andy Sachs, a fresh college graduate hired as the assistant to the demanding Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), editor of the high-fashion magazine Runway. Comprising $326 million worldwide, the movie was a box office smash and Streep received an Oscar nomination for her performance.

Although no official negotiations for the cast have been announced, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Anne Hathaway recently got back together at the SAG Awards to generate buzz about the sequel. Hathaway, however, voiced uncertainty regarding a continuation of the narrative during an interview with E! News, saying, “I don’t think a continuation of that story is probably ever gonna happen.”

A Puck article claims that although Miranda Priestly would still be in charge of Runway, the story of the possible sequel would depict her struggling financially in the modern publishing scene. Played by Emily Blunt, Miranda’s former assistant Emily Charlton is now an executive for a luxury brand conglomerate Runway advertises from. Though their relationship is complex, the plot questions if Emily will help her former boss among these difficulties.

The popularity of the original movie went beyond only its box office performance, particularly in the fashion industry. Patricia Field, the costume designer for the movie, was nominated for an Academy Award for her work; the movie itself was turned into a stage musical starring Vanessa Williams as Miranda Priestly using original songs by Elton John.

Author Lauren Weisberger published a follow-up to her book “Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns,” in 2013, tracking Andy Sachs as she arranges her wedding and takes over as editor of a bridal magazine. It’s unclear, though, whether the movie sequel would borrow from this novel or choose an other story line.

Following its acquisition of 20th Century Fox, the sequel promises to recreate the glitzy yet competitive world of high fashion that enthralled viewers over a decade ago, using original creatives and backed by Disney. Fans want more specifics and formal cast and plot confirmations so they may witness the legendary characters on the big screen.
